Garden Design Introduction

Participants Profile

This course is aimed at individuals who wish to learn the basics of garden design and apply it to their own garden. The tutor will work with participants, to facilitate them to design their garden to cater for their own interests and lifestyle.

Course Description

Surveying and assessing your garden, microclimate and soil. The brief - making a garden for YOU - a place to relax? a play-space for kids? a kitchen garden? a herb garden? an outdoor room? a wildlife garden? Garden styles, being inspired by the past, creating a mood. Design starting points: scale; space; form; texture; tone; balance harmony; repetition and the use of colour.

  • Understanding plant names and descriptions
  • History of gardening and introduction to different styles, e.g. Natural, Japanese, Contemporary, etc.
  • Surveying and assessing the garden, microclimate and soil
  • Principals of design, introducing: scale; space; form; texture; tone; balance; harmony; repetition; and the use of colour
  • Planting for sun and shade, using the seasons to your advantage and container gardening
  • Learn about lighting and furnishing your garden
