Success again for an LCFE photography learner in this year’s Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards in Dublin. Linda McNulty won the News Photographer of the Year Award at the ceremony which took place in the Mansion House on Wednesday 21 April. Hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí O Sé, the 10th anniversary Smedia Awards were attended by over 600 students, including LCFE photography learners, and a variety of national media personalities._DSC0067-1-.jpg

Five photography learners and one media learner from the college were shortlisted for this year’s awards across three categories – Photographer of the Year, Sports Photographer of the Year and News Photographer of the Year. LCFE was the only college outside of Dublin with student representatives in all three categories and this marked the fourth successive year that learners from the college were selected for the awards final.

The Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards recognise the brightest up and coming media talent in the country. The categories are judged each year by high profile media professionals, with national newspapers, broadcasters and websites sponsoring the various awards.

At the Oxygen.ie Student Media Awards in 2007, a photography learner won Sports Photographer of the Year & Photographer of the Year. Both categories went to Dermot Culhane, who subsequently set up his own photography business in Limerick. In 2008, the college was represented by Diarmuid Greene, who won Sports Photographer of the Year. Due to Diarmuid’s success at the awards he was offered a full time position with the sports photography agency Sportsfile.
